A new alert from UN Women last week calls attention to the plight of women and girls in Yemen, according to Mission Network News (MNN) citing a recent report’s conclusion that “Women and girls are disproportionately impacted by the compounded humanitarian crisis and the escalation in Yemen”.

The report added “As supply chains and services are severely hampered, women and girls in Yemen face increased barriers to accessing food, clean water, maternal health services, and psycho-social support.

Mobility restrictions, demanding care giving responsibilities, and restrictive social norms further limit women’s ability to reach aid, exposing them to increased risks of violence, malnutrition, and diseases.

As Yemen stands on the brink of a deeper crisis, this Gender Alert unpacks the gender specific impacts of the recent airstrike on Yemeni women and girls. It calls on the international community to act urgently to support their protection and ensure their access to critical services—efforts that are essential to safeguarding their survival, dignity, well-being, and rights.

The report says that today, an estimated 2.3 million women and girls are displaced in Yemen.
